How to Break Up Your Yard Space

It was once believed that a large yard with edging was the way to make your property appear as expansive as possible. However, with the modern landscape design, this has been proven untrue.

The key to making your yard appear larger is to break up the space. This creates different “rooms” if you will, inviting guests to partake in a visual journey that is always changing and offering a different way to enjoy the yard.

How Can I Break Up Yard Space?

Breaking up yard space thankfully isn’t difficult to do. There are no hard rules to the materials you can use or the layout, it all depends on your taste and how you want to use each section.

Hardscaping

Hardscaping is one of the most low-maintenance ways to establish sections in a backyard. This entails using garden pebbles, mulch, or gravel to create walkways, flowerbeds, or patio areas for relaxation.

Landscaping stones are durable and last for years, so you won’t have to worry too much about upkeep. They also come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, so it’s easy to create distinct lines that show where a section ends and another begins.

Hedges

This is one of the classic ways to create division in a yard. Not only do hedges section out space, but they provide ample privacy.

Choose a plant variety that lasts year-round for easier maintenance, such as an evergreen variety. You can choose shorter shrubs to delineate an area or higher ones if privacy from the neighbors is what you’re aiming for.

Tall plants

Tall, airy plants are a pretty way to section out your yard since they create the allure of openness while providing some coverage for privacy.

A field of long grasses or ornamental flowers does the job of creating depth that makes a yard look expansive.
