How to Create a Rustic Fireplace with Pebble Tiles

We are in that weird in-between season when winter seems to drag on forever and everyone is watching to see when spring flowers will start popping up and the sun warms the earth up. 

Waiting out the chill can be tough, but not if you have a good house project to keep your mind occupied. One of our favorite ways to deal with the cold is with a cup of cocoa and a crackling fireplace. So, if you’re looking for a project that you can benefit from while waiting for winter to say sayonara, then we would like to offer some easy ways to revamp your fireplace for optimal enjoyment.

1. Create a Decorative Wall with Pebble Tiles

You might not dig the placement of your fireplace. Perhaps it’s placed against a drab, concrete wall or you’re not keen on getting down with a brick surface as a replacement. 

Fortunately, there is another way to achieve an earthy, natural look without having to get crazy with tools and labor. Meet the pebble tile- the mesh square tile that is covered in natural stones. With some grout, you can install pebble tiles on your own, virtually anywhere in the home.

2. Go with Gas

Sure, there’s something romantic to be said about wood logs burning in the hearth, but it’s also a ton of work to keep up with and it’s also not the best for the environment. The fire starts up immediately without anyone having to trudge out back for dry logs, the flame is clean burning, and there is very little cleanup to worry about. 

3. Incorporate a Chunky Pine Wood Mantle

You might be staring at your fireplace wondering what is missing. Well, it just might be the mantle. Perhaps it’s too dinky, or there isn’t a mantle at all. A prominent mantle makes any fireplace more rustic and garners the attention it deserves.

A simple DIY option for making a mantle is by keeping the design minimalistic. Build a large block mantle with pine boards and scrap boards, simply by creating a cover that goes over your existing mantle.

Stain the wooden mantle after the build is complete and apply a veneer finish to hide the edges where the boards were nailed together.
