All About Aquascaping

Aquascaping or “underwater gardening” is a hobby that has taken off in recent years and for good reason- it’s a unique and beautiful way to add some serious pizzazz to your yard.

However, all good things take time and research. If you are interested in aquascaping, but aren’t sure where to begin, our trusty intro guide can get you started on the right foot!

What is Aquascaping?

This isn’t your typical aquarium setup from the pet store. Aquascaping has turned into a passionate art form, requiring time-intensive planning and technical setup. Natural elements such as plants, stones, and driftwood are used to create an enchanting underwater world- all designed by you.

To get started you’ll want to decide where you’ll install your aquarium and the size. Other supplies include aquarium filters, lighting, liquid fertilizers, and carbon dioxide tanks.

In the next section, we’ll give you a basic breakdown of how to implement these elements into your design.

Keep it Simple

Sometimes less is more, and this can certainly be applied to aquascaping. Don’t feel tempted to splurge on a bunch of underwater plants that can overwhelm the design. Instead, choose a few low-maintenance varieties and focus on coordinating colors and textures using wood and pebbles.

Variety

Simple doesn’t mean you have to forego variety. You can find some one-of-a-kind elements to really let your inner creativity shine. Driftwood, aqua soils, colorful Fire Glass, fish, and landscaping stones can all be used.

Proportion

Take into account the depth of your aquascape, as large elements can make it look smaller. For example, you probably don’t want to use a plant variety with large leaves that take up a ton of space.

However, you can use colors to add depth. Contrasting Rain Forest Black Polished Pebbles with lighter pebbles on the surface brings attention to the size and texture of the design.
