5 Indoor Gardening Hacks That Rock

We talk a lot about outdoor gardening, but what if you don’t have a yard? That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of growing your own greenery.

Starting an indoor garden is a no brainer when you’ve got tricks up your sleeve to make the process easy peasy. We have 5 awesome indoor garden hacks to help you achieve the garden of your dreams.

1. Make an herb planter

An herb planter allows you to grow all of your favorite cooking ingredients fresh. Not only that, but it’s so much more cost effective. You can plant them together to save space, so they stay at a size that’s low maintenance. Rosemary, basil, chives and thyme are good options that don’t require much work and smell heavenly.

2. Choose vegetables that can be regrown

Green onions, celery, garlic, cilantro and romaine lettuce can all be regrown from a single bulb or root. Next time you go to the market and buy a bunch of green onions, instead of throwing away the white bulbs, place them in a jar of water and watch them mature in a week!

3. Be smart with minimal space

Feeling anxious about not having enough space in your apartment for plant containers? You don’t need flat surfaces, instead- go vertical! You can build a simple hanging plant wall out of a pallet or suspend containers to hang from the ceiling. Here are more DIY ideas.

4. Make compost

You don’t have to splurge on chemical-laden fertilizer for your indoor garden. Since your kitchen is right there, making your own compost is more convenient than ever. Just save your fruit and vegetable scraps and store them in a special box or large container. Eggshells are a nutritious additive for compost as well.

5. Paper towel hack

If you’re away at work and tend to forget about watering your plants, the humble paper towel is the answer. All you have to do is roll up one paper towel like a rope, line the planter with one end sticking into a glass of water. This little irrigation system will ensure your plants get enough water without you having to lift a finger!
